Who? What? When? Where? Why?How?
Overview
Background

Beside designing at Orange Digital Center, imagining innovative digital product ideas is one of my tasks.
At the beginning of the year 2019, I came up with a digital solution to help citizens stay in the know of what's happening around them, combat fake news, and promote local/regional journalism.
Goals

• Build an app that is fast and easy to use for everyone, everywhere.
• Create a platform to collect real news from real people.
• Minimum supervision after app release
• Make the design easy to implement.
Project Scope

• Client : Orange S.A.
• Project Timeline : 1 week
• Deliverables : High-fidelity Prototype + Branding
• Languages : French + Arabic + English
• My Role : Product Designer (UI/UX, Branding, Copywriting, Motion Design...)
• Tools : Adobe Xd, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Lottie Files, pen and paper.
• Date : Circa 2019

The Solution

• "Lennow", a mobile application that helps you stay updated on what's really happening around you. Login with your mobile phone number and set up your account, Grant the app access to your location. Now you can see relevant stories related to your current location, and you can fact-check and interact with by saying if the news is real or fake by swiping a "truth slider" after reading the story. You can also capture a moment and share it in that exact location.

• Every story has a reliability score and a timeline. And if the news is irrelevant (no interactions for more than ten days) or fake (reliability score under 10%), the Reliability and Hourglass icons will fade away, and the story will be deleted.

• Besides your current location, you can also see the news of 2 additional addresses (home and work) from the location menu, but you will not be able to react to the stories since you are not close to those locations.
 Fast-forward to the
Design
Naming

Combining a very known English word which is "Now" with an Arabic word with a local accent "Lenna" which means "Here", I ended up with a very authentic and cool sounding name "Lennow" (Here & Now). Not only this name sounds very familiar to the locals but also it shares the first syllable of very well known newspapers (Le Figaro, Le Monde..).
Logo

An orange record button and a dot on the map that signifies a location, a tag that represents a place, and a headline. Combining all these elements, I ended up with a minimalistic yet powerful logo that works also as a TV channel logo, which is great!
Color Picking

Since we must follow our brand guidelines at Orange and use a specific color palette, I often overcome this obstacle by limiting the used colors to create a "unique" color palette. Orange is the accent color, Red and Green are the functional colors, and the rest is for ensuring contrast and accessibility for users with visual impairment .
Font

When it comes to choosing fonts for mobile apps, I always like to use system fonts for better compatibility, and for Android apps, Roboto works perfectly. The font features friendly and open curves allowing letters to be settled into their natural width. This makes for a more natural reading rhythm more commonly found in humanist and serif types.

Iconography

I used some Material Design icons by Google, and I added some little tweaks and details to these beautifully crafted symbols, that look great at any scale.

Motion

I always try to not overuse UI animation, so besides quick interfaces transition,
I only implement short, functional, and informative animations that help improve the user experience.
Putting it all together to serve an ideal user experience
UI/UX
Quick setup
A user-friendly and smooth login flow.
Login with your phone number then write you name and select your optional additional addresses.
Give permissions
Grant the app access to your location
Turn on location and voila!
Checking the news and fact-checking the news
See relevant stories related to your current location, and you can fact-check them by saying
whether the news is real or fake with the help of the "truth slider" after reading the story description.
See relevant stories related to your current location, and interact to make a change.
You can't tell a tale if you are not there
To prevent the spread of rumours, you can only vote on stories that you share the same current location with.
You can’t fake the news!
